What is .htaccess and how does it work?

It is a file well known to webmasters who seek to decentralize Apache definitions (Apache Directive), to apply new / other rules (cache control, mod_rewrite, php flag, custom error pages, redirect, etc.) on a specific directory (usually public_html). Writing general definitions to an .htaccess file located in the web-root has an effect on all directories and files in that tree. Exceptions are subdomain directories, which are written in Apache config with settings default.
