eSIM or physical SIM on iPhone? What is the best choice?

If you don't know what to choose between eSIM or physical SIM, I'm sure this article will help you. It's a personal experience that made me change my opinion a bit about some technologies present on the devices iPhone or many modethem by smartphone.

As a quick introduction for everyone to understand, eSIM is an acronym for “embedded SIM” (i.e. built-in SIM card), also known as virtual SIM card or electronic SIM card. Instead of using a physical SIM card, eSIM is an electronic chip embedded in devices, on which multiple phone numbers can be installed.

eSIM or physical SIM on iPhone? What is the best choice?

Until a few days ago I would have said with conviction that eSIM is the best choice for iPhone or for any other type of smartphone that supports eSIM. The most solid argument would have been that the eSIM is very easily activated from the mobile operator's online account and that changing the eSIM is very easy from the mobile operator's online account.

However, things are not quite like that, and if I were now given the choice between an eSIM or a physical SIM, I would choose the latter, because it offers greater flexibility when the phone or iPhone it no longer works at all.

The moment a device iPhone with the number on the eSIM effectively stopped working, I found that some operators ask for verification on the phone number when activating the eSIM. That is, the phone number that will be on the eSIM must be available to install the eSIM profile.

It seems silly, in my opinion. Because if the phone number is unavailable, the user is no longer able to receive the verification code to generate the eSIM profile installation QR code on another phone. I understood that it is a security measure, but I think another method could be found.

If I had a physical SIM in this situation, the problem would have been solved very quickly. I'm moving the physical SIM from iPhone defective in another phone. That way I didn't have to wait several hours until I could get to a store of the mobile phone operator. Is about Orange România.

In conclusion, if you want to switch from traditional SIM to eSIM, find out what it consists of first the eSIM installation process with your mobile operator. If the eSIM activation will require the phone number to be accessible, I honestly tell you that it is a good idea to stick with the traditional SIM card. You can quickly move this from one phone to another, without having to go to a representative office of the mobile operator.

The real advantage of eSIM it's for those who need more many phone numbers on the same device. For example, on devices iPhone 13 Pro / iPhone 14 Pro (possibly others too modele), you can install up to 7-8 eSIM profiles. That means like on the device iPhone you can install up to 7-8 phone numbers from different operators, two of which can be used simultaneously. The user can easily choose from the settings which profiles are active on the device.
